Alfa Romeo won the Mille Miglia 2008 historical re-enactment

Alfa Romeo was the indisputable star of the Mille Miglia 2008 historical re-enactment: after its win in 2007, this year a Alfa Romeo 6C 1500 Super Sport dating from 1928 ? driven by Luciano and Antonio Viaro ? again won the marathon reserved for historical cars, with an Alfa 6C 1750 Gran Sport driven by the Argentine team of Fernando Sanchez Zinni and Juan Bartolom? close behind at the finish post. Forty-six of the treasured cars in the race were Alfa Romeos, making it the most popular brand in this restaging. Altogether, no fewer than 375 cars lined up for the starter's flag in the 'finest race in the world' as Enzo Ferrari famously described it. Not to mention the fact that this year, Alfa Romeo joined the other Fiat Group Automobiles brands as Joint Presenting Sponsor to this prestigious event.
The Alfa Romeo 6C 1500 Super Sport is a model that shares a particular empathy with the 1000 Miglia race: in 1928 and in 1929 it won the speed race with Giuseppe Campari, at the wheel, repeating its success in the re-enactment in 2007 and 2008 with Luciano Viaro at the wheel. The same car and the same route, although in the 1920s, the roads were decidedly worse, with most of the race over unsurfaced roads. The re-staging also maintained many of the same hurdles, beginning with the 1600 km covered from Thursday 15 to Saturday 17 May, from Brescia to Brescia, passing through Rome.
The race followed the regularity formula for historical cars, a discipline that requires nerves of steel and a car that responds promptly to the driver?s controls. This was the case this year with the good-looking Alfa Romeo 6C 1500 Super Sport, from the Alfa Romeo Historical Museum in Arese, which proved itself to be fast and reliable at all times. Attributes that Luciano Viaro, together with his son Antonio, was able to exploit to the full by coming in ahead of the Argentinean team Sanchez Zinni and Bartolom?, driving an Alfa Romeo 6C 1750 Gran Sport from 1930, the year when the 1000 Miglia was won in an identical car driven by Tazio Nuvolari, thus inspiring the legend of Nuvolari and his ?Alfa Rossa?.
This legend was also supported by results, with Alfa cars winning 11 of the 30 editions of the 1000 Miglia race contended between 1927 and 1957, often driving off with magnificent triple crowns, such as that of 1930 with Nuvolari first Achille Varzi second and Giuseppe Campari third. In 1932, Mario Borzacchini won with an Alfa 8C 2300 Spider Touring, while in 1933, Nuvolari won again ahead of two of his team mates. The next year, Alfa Romeo won another triple crown with Varzi, Nuvolari and Louis Chiron The Alfa 8C cars were also unbeatable in 1935 (Pintacuda won first place), in 1936 (Brivio), 1937 (Pintacuda) and in 1938 (Biondetti). In1947, the 8C 2900 B won again, with Biondetti at the wheel again together with Romano. This tradition of success has extended to the present day thanks to the cars preserved by the Alfa Romeo Historical Centre of Arese and raced in the main historical car events.

Alfa Romeo wins at the Pirelli Regatta, reconfirming its position as fastest boat

Alfa Romeo, the 30-metre boat owned and skippered by Neville Crichton, began the 2008 sailing season by winning 4 Line Honours (first across the line) at the Pirelli Regatta, as well as winning Group A in the IRC classification.
Great expectations on the water between two historical friends from New Zealand, Neville Crichton and Brad Butterworth, the Alinghi skipper who with 4 America?s Cups won on board New Zealand and Alinghi is one of the most successful sailors in the world. The integration between the Alfa Romeo and Alinghi teams was perfect, and is one of the most interesting and important news items for both fans and the teams on board, who will have the opportunity to compare notes on sailing techniques and boat handling. A mix which could kindle a new spark for Alfa Romeo, reputed to be the fastest maxi yacht in the world.
This new success was built winning both the first two coastal races and the 66 nautical mile-long night race, and today Alfa Romeo has also hit the Line Honours jackpot by crossing the finishing line once again in a race filled with light, uncertain winds, which in any case did not obstruct any of the boat?s 24 tonnes. The regatta took place in the waters off Portofino, attracting the curiosity of many boats around the starting line interested in the sailing performance of the 135 teams in the race. At the end of the Pirelli Regattas, the number of Line Honours Alfa Romeo is now able to put on show stands at 121.
Neville Crichton, skipper and owner, commented, ?This was the first time I have taken part in the Pirelli Regatta, and it was a wonderful experience, both for the number of boats on the water and for the determination of the teams to give their all in this event, which is now in its 39th edition. The racing season has just got started, and we are still breaking in the boat, which is 60 cm longer than last season, in order to get the greatest possible power from it, but this start has been really promising and we can only hope to carry on in the same way.?
Brad Butterworth, team leader of Alinghi and tactician on board Alfa Romeo, stated that, ?Alfa Romeo is filled with technology, surprisingly fast, the ideal boat for fans of sailing and high performance. On board, everything ran like clockwork, and the team integration was perfect. Racing with Alfa Romeo was a thrilling experience, for me it was great to be on board.?
Francesco Rapetti, AKA Cico, who with his Alinghi victory became the first Italian in the history of the America?s Cup to win the prestigious silver cup, confirmed, ?Starting out with Alfa Romeo and winning, in a race between Portofino, where I was born, and Santa Margherita, where I live, is the best a sailor could ever ask for. The boat ran like the wind, and my first time on Alfa Romeo was a fantastic debut, I felt at ease on the boat right from the start, and I am sure that we will keep on working well.?

Ciao e buona ALFA a Tutti
