I punti di forza della 33 sono stati: affidabilit\u00c3\u00a0 ed ottimo livello delle prestazioni. L&#8217;alimentazione iniziale \u00c3\u00a8 a carburatori, in seguito viene introdotta l&#8217;iniezione elettronica BOSCH LE-Jetronic. Nel 1988 tutti i motori boxer adottano camere di scoppio a profilo lenticolare che consente l&#8217;utilizzo della benzina verde senza piombo. Dal 1990 sul 1.7 arrivano le 4 valvole per cilindro, la potenza varia dagli iniziali 79 cv della prima serie fino a quasi raddoppiare con i 133 cv della permanent 4, una 1.7 con la trazione integrale.
